Johannesburg - A 22-year-old man was arrested on Friday in connection with the murder of a 92-year-old woman at her home in Benoni, said North Rand police on Friday.
Betty Stroh was beaten to death and her car and some household goods were stolen, said superintendent Eugene Opperman.
Opperman said: "Investigations indicate that she was alone at her home in Farrarmere, Benoni when a young man approached her at her front door.
"Preliminary investigations suggest that she allowed the young man into her house. He later drove off in her car."
Opperman said a minister of religion who went to visit Stroh on Sunday morning found her body in the house.
"She was already dead. At first it appeared as if the woman died of natural causes.
Injuries to the jaw
However, after extensive investigations detectives came to the conclusion that she had been murdered."
Opperman said an autopsy indicated injuries to the jaw, suggesting that she had been assaulted.
He said the day and time of her death had not yet been established.
Detectives traced the 22-year-old to a house in Primrose where he was arrested on Friday morning.
Stroh's car and other items stolen from her house, which Opperman could not name because of the investigation, were found in the man's possession.
The suspect is expected to appear in Benoni magistrate's court on Monday.
