Pathologist to face the music
24/11/2006 12:46 - (SA)
Bloemfontein - A disciplinary committee of the Health Professions Council of SA decided on Friday that a charge of unprofessional conduct against a Bloemfontein pathologist should stand.
The hearing against Dr Leon Wagner, former Free State chief state pathologist, would continue at a date still to be announced.
Wagner is accused of unprofessional conduct after he apparently recorded "Aids" as the cause of death on a death certificate without proper evidence and/or examining the body.
The committee also decided that Section 35(3) of the Constitution was applicable in disciplinary inquiries like these. It indicated that a person charged was entitled to a fair hearing.
The committee said that the rules of evidence in terms of the Criminal Procedure Act were also applicable.
