200 immigrants held in raid
26/11/2006 07:09 - (SA)
Johannesburg - More than 200 immigrants were arrested in an early morning raid on Saturday in Cape Town, said home affairs.
"This has been one of the most successful operations we have conducted... It has achieved a lot," said department spokesperson Mantshele Tau.
"Just over 200 people were arrested."
The arrests were made when immigration officers, backed by police, raided a community alongside the N1 near Woodstock.
By the end of the day, 186 immigrants from different countries were still in custody, facing deportation due to the lack of correct immigration documentation.
"They are being taken to Lindela," said Tau, referring to the repatriation centre in Krugersdorp, Gauteng.
Captain Elliot Sinyangana of the Western Cape police said four of those arrested would also face charges in connection with robbery, assault, theft and possession of stolen property.
He said police were involved in the raid only to safeguard the immigration officers.
