Durban - Convicted Durban businessman Schabir Shaik has been admitted to hospital, correctional services officials said on Monday.

The department of correctional services refused to divulge his condition but confirmed that he was in hospital.

"We can only acknowledge that he's been taken to hospital," said deputy commissioner of communications for correctional services Manelisi Wolela.

Sapa has reliably learnt that he was taken to St Augustine's Hospital and was under police guard.
