Johannesburg - A 32-year-old policeman was killed by hijackers and then robbed of his car and service pistol at Ga-Rankuwa over the weekend, North West police said on Monday.
Constable Johannes Mabaso was on duty when he spotted six men lurking around his brother's home, police area commissioner Doraval Govender said.
"The officer called for back up, but in the meantime went out to the scene."
Mabaso was wounded by one of the men before all of them approached him and shot him eight times at close range. He was believed to have been wearing his bulletproof vest at the time.
The gunmen then stole Mabaso's service pistol and hijacked his police patrol car.
Govender said the car was abandoned a short distance later and another motorist was hijacked. The motorist was ordered to surrender his car and was left unhurt at the side of a road.
"The vehicle was found abandoned at Mabopane railway station."
Govender said a motive for the attack was not known and the men were still at large.
"An intensive search has been launched to hunt down the killers of Constable Mabaso. This attack will not be tolerated and the perpetrators will be brought to book," he said.
