Johannesburg - Police shot dead four suspected bank robbers and seriously injured six others following a bank robbery at Teba Bank at City Deep, west of Johannesburg, on Monday.

Provincial police spokesperson Govindsamy Mariemuthoo said a passer-by was also seriously injured in the shoot-out on the border of Dobsonville and Roodepoort.

"Police followed up information on the robbery and chased a white bakkie and a maroon Caravelle (minibus)," he said.

"When they (the occupants of the vehicles) realised police were after them they opened fire and police retaliated."

Mariemuthoo said police confiscated an AK-47, an Uzzi sub-machine gun, a rifle and seven pistols.

An undisclosed amount of cash was also recovered, he said.
