Komatipoort - A man is due to appear in court on Tuesday on charges of beating his mother to death in a drunken rage.
The 25-year-old apparently was angry that his mother had such a busy social life she was seldom home to cook and clean up after his father.
Witnesses heard the angry son screaming on Sunday that her conduct was disrespectful and a disgrace to the family name.
Captain Velisiwe Mdaka of Mbuzini police said: "Witnesses say the drunk son stormed into the family homestead at Mbangwane village on Sunday afternoon, where he found his mother and father sitting in their courtyard, talking.
"He cornered his mother, and started screaming at her and beating her," said Mdaka.
His 65-year-old father was unable to stop his son.
The son allegedly repeatedly punched his mother in the face and head, before violently pushing her over.
Time to sober up
Mdaka said: "It all happened very quickly. The woman appears to have died before the old man could drag his son off her."
None of the people can be named until the son appears in Tonga magistrate's court on Tuesday on murder charges.
His court appearance initially was supposed to be on Monday, but was postponed to Tuesday to allow him to sober up enough to make a statement.
Mdaka said: "The father is traumatised and is in shock.
"He apparently was very fond of his wife, and said he was not upset with her. No one knows what sparked the attack.".
