Malelane - Mpumalanga police have launched a manhunt for a suspected rapist and drug dealer who escaped from hospital on Sunday night.
Mandla Mamba somehow managed to unlock leg-chains and sneak past two police guards at Shongwe Hospital, before disappearing into the "Wild West" villages of Nkomazi.
Mamba originally was arrested more than a month ago on charges of raping a teenager, as well as being in possession of large quantities of dagga.
He was transferred from police holding cells to Shongwe Hospital, near the northern border of Swaziland, after complaining of severe stomach cramps.
Inspector Thulane Mnisi of Schoemansdal police said on Monday: "Mamba was chained to his bed, and had two guards because he was believed to be dangerous.
'Inside help' being probed
"We have no idea how he managed to get the leg-irons off, or how he managed to escape with both guards in his hospital room," said spokesman.
Police are investigating whether Mamba may have received inside help, or whether the police guards had been negligent.
"The guards claim they discovered he was missing only when they went to fetch him for a shower on Monday morning," said Mnisi.
Anyone who has any information about Mamba can call Mnisi on 013 781 0059.
