Robbers nabbed cracking safe
28/11/2006 18:54 - (SA)
Pretoria - Three armed robbers were arrested after trying to cut open a safe at Steel and Parks in Silverton, said Pretoria police on Tuesday.
Inspector Katlego Mogale said the three robbers, two of whom are 23 and the other 26, approached a security guard and pointed a gun at him at the gate early on Tuesday morning.
Two of the men went into the building and through the roof to disarm the alarm system. Using an angle-grinder, they tried to get to the money inside the safe.
Mogale said the chief of a security company happened to be calling around Silverton to check whether everything was in order.
All three were arrested
"When he called Steel and Parks and nobody answered, he called the firm's owner who called the police.
"Police found the robbers still grinding the safe."
The first suspect holding the guard hostage was arrested and the other two arrested shortly afterwards.
The robbers will be charged with armed robbery and are due to appear in Pretoria magistrate's court on Thursday.
