R3.1m stolen in heist
29/11/2006 13:13 - (SA)
Durban - Armed robbers made off with R3.1m after hijacking a cash-in-transit vehicle in Durban police said on Wednesday.
Captain Shane Smith of the serious and violent crimes unit said the SBV van had stopped at the Game City shopping complex on Tuesday afternoon to fill ATMs with cash when the armed robbers struck.
Smith said details were sketchy, but two security guards had entered the complex to fill ATMs when the waiting driver was apparently hijacked.
The van driver was then apparently forced at gunpoint to drive to a nearby side road where the robbers transferred the money boxes into a waiting white bakkie.
It was not clear how the driver escaped.
Police are investigating and Smith denied earlier media reports that R30m had been taken in the heist.
