Harrismith - A man was shot and killed near a cemetery at Intabazwe township, said Free State police on Sunday.

Constable Mmako Mophiring said the man was shot in the head while walking home from a nearby tavern on Saturday morning.

"The man and his friend were approached by four men wearing balaclavas. One of them shot him in the head."

He said the man was dead on arrival at Thebe Hospital.

His friend was not hurt in the incident.

Police are investigating a case of murder against the four men who fled on foot immediately after the shooting.

"A 9mm shell which was found at the shooting, will be sent to laboratories for analysis," said Mophiring.
