Johannesburg - Two people died and four others were injured when a pension paypoint near Qumbu was robbed on Tuesday, said Eastern Cape police.
Captain Ursula Roelofse said a Fidelity security guard and one of nine robbers were killed in a shoot-out at the paypoint in Upper Ngxaxha village at 11:00 on Tuesday.
As the paymaster officers and guards were preparing for the payout, nine armed men arrived in a white Toyota bakkie, said Roelofse.
"They got out of the vehicle and ran towards the three security guards, brandishing firearms.
"They ordered the guards to put their firearms down."
Robbers also wounded
One of them resisted and a shoot-out between the two parties ensued.
"The guard was fatally wounded," said Roelofse.
Five of the robbers also were wounded, but managed to run to their bakkie after stealing an undisclosed amount of money.
The bakkie was found abandoned in a nearby forest with the body of one of the robbers.
"He had been shot in the stomach."
Police later discovered the bakkie had been stolen from a house in Mount Frere on Monday.
The eight robbers were still at large, said Roelofse.
