Mall shoot-out: Guard critical
06/12/2006 19:35 - (SA)
Johannesburg - A Coin security guard is in a critical condition after being shot in the face, neck and shoulder in an attempted heist at a mall in Roodepoort on the West Rand, said paramedics on Wednesday.
ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak said the guard was on his way to collect and drop off money at the Spar Supermarket in the Goldman Crossing shopping centre in Florida at 12:45.
A group of armed robbers attacked him, and shots were fired.
"It is believed the robbers fled without any of the money," said Vermaak.
The guard was treated at the mall by paramedics and taken to Milpark Hospital in a critical, but stable, condition. No other people were injured in the shoot-out.
It has been reported that more than R810m has been stolen in about 3 400 cash-in-transit robberies in South Africa since 2000.
