Johannesburg - Four robbers posing as police kidnapped a man at an ATM in Lenasia on Friday and robbed him of R3 000, said Ekurhuleni metro police.
"They told him that they were policemen, and pointed a gun at him...," said spokesperson Mveli Nhlapho.
They told him to get into their car and took him to Tokoza, where they dumped him.
"Metro police patrolling the area were stopped by the man and he told them about what had happened," said Nhlapo.
He said the officers caught three of the robbers. They were being held in the Brackendown Police Station holding cells. The fourth robber escaped.
Mzeli warned people to be careful at ATMs. If approached by police, they should ask for their appointment certificates, he advised.
