Johannesburg - A man was shot and wounded after he shot at a police officer in Alberton, south of Johannesburg, said Ekurhuleni metro police on Saturday.
Inspector Kobeli Mokheseng said the incident occurred in Van Bergen Street at about 19:00 on Friday.
A patrolling officer had noticed the 35-year-old man and three others trying to jump over the wall of a house in Jackson Street.
"When the men noticed the patrolling car approaching, they started shooting at it and the officer returned fire," said Mokheseng.
One of the men was shot in the chest but managed to run away. He was later found hiding in a lapa at a house in Van Bergen Street.
"He was found in possession of an M75 9mm pistol with the serial number filed off and 12 rounds of live ammunition," said Mokheseng.
He said the four were allegedly going to rob a house in the area.
The man was taken to hospital, said Mokheseng. The police officer was unharmed.
Police were investigating a case of attempted murder, and possession of a suspected stolen firearm and ammunition.
"The search for the three men will continue," said Mokheseng.
