Johannesburg - Nearly half the women in Gauteng drink "recklessly" over weekends.
That is the opinion of a 2006 annual report on health in South Africa that was recently issued by the Health Systems Trust (HST).
Their research indicated that about 48% of the women in this province
"dangerously" abused alcohol over weekends.
Research showed that although nearly double as many men than women in
Gauteng used alcohol, 11% more women than men abused alcohol.
"Alcohol abuse among women sharply increased over the last couple of years," said Shamim Garda, executive director of the South African National Council
on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (Sanca) on Tuesday.
She said many women didn't stop once they have had a drink with their colleagues on a Friday afternoon.
"It is a culture in the corporate world to have a drink after work and this can cause a lot of damage. Women feel they have to drink to be part of a group at the office."
Sanca researchers indicated that stress at work or at home and depression were the biggest reasons driving women to drink.
