14/12/2006 10:40 - (SA)
Johannesburg - A 13-year-old boy drowned in a dam at a farm near Stellenbosch on Wednesday afternoon, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said.
Spokesperson Craig Lambinon said the boy was swimming in the dam when the accident happened around 18:00.
Police divers and a Netcare 911 surf rescue helicopter searched and found the boy's body in the water within minutes.
Paramedics declared him dead at the scene.
Police were investigating the accident, said Lambinon.
He urged people to be extremely cautious and ensure they were safe in dams, rivers and beaches.
"There are more drowning accidents reported over the holiday season.
"All efforts should be made to prevent such accidents," said Lambinon.
