Johannesburg - Two men travelling in a bakkie were shot dead during a drive-by shooting in Springs on Wednesday night, East Rand police said.

The bakkie's driver stopped when shots were fired at his vehicle from a silver-grey Toyota Corolla in Ermelo Road, Largo, said Superintendent Andy Pieke.

"The driver of the Corolla made a U-turn and drove back to the bakkie. The 38-year-old driver ran from the bakkie into the veld and then heard more shots being fired. The Corolla then sped away. The two murdered men are aged between 38 and 40."

Pieke said the motive for the shooting was not known. The bakkie was travelling from Daveyton to Mpumalanga.

The victims' next of kin still had to be found and informed.
