Cape Town - Taliep Petersen's son sang with him on stage for the very first time the day before he died. It was a dream that the murdered musician's son had cherished for years, and a debut to remember forever.
Madeegha Petersen, Taliep's ex-wife, told Die Burger on Monday that fourteen-year-old Mogamat Ashur, Taliep's only son and the apple of his eye, sang with his father in Wynberg on Friday night, the day before Petersen was shot at his home in Athlone.
She said Taliep had invited Mogamat to perform with him, because he considered him to be "ready" for their first performance together.
"Taliep decided on Friday night, at a performance in Wynberg, that his son was ready to sing with him," she said sadly.
"Taliep's unexpected and untimely death has not only broken my heart, our four lovely children are completely devastated by this senseless deed. I am furious, angry and deeply hurt."
She said the new year was to be an important one for each of the four children, for different reasons.
Children must walk alone
"Each one will reach an important milestone in their life quite early next year.
"They will have to walk that road without the love and support of their father, now."
She said she was hurting not only because the father of her children was gunned down so unnecessarily, but also because "my friend, a wonderfully generous and kind-natured person has been savagely destroyed.
"Taliep did so much, he gave in abundance to his family, his relatives and the community he lived in."
According to her, the children would have accompanied Petersen within the next week or two to London, where the Petersen-Kramer musical revue Ghoema is being staged.
Petersen returned to South Africa last week after attending the opening night of Ghoema with his close friend and co-producer David Kramer.
