Cape Town - "I'm sure it was a hit," says the father of entertainment star Taliep Petersen, 56, who was killed in his Athlone home at the weekend.
Petersen was shot dead, execution style, allegedly by robbers after he and his family were overpowered in his fortress-like home late at night. It's believed that he let the robbers into the house himself.
Mogamat Ladien Petersen, 77, says he and others in the family can't understand why his son, who was very security conscious, would let visitors in late at night.
"He didn't even want to let me in after 22:00, nor did he answer the phone that late at night. He was very disciplined.
"We had to make an appointment to visit him.
"I don't know what made him open that door. They got money - why did they have to kill him?"
Taliep's sister, Máatoema Groenmeyer, agrees that the men - who wore balaclavas - had no intention of robbing the family.
"He must have known them.
"They came to kill him and tried to cover it up to look like a robbery.
"There are too many valuables in the house. And there was a Mercedes-Benz SLK of R600 000 as well as a 4x4 in the garage. Why didn't they take those?"
When Die Burger visited Taliep Petersen's house on Monday, police were questioning his wife, Najwa and her son from a previous marriage, 25-year-old Achmat Gameldien.
Visitors were told to come back later.
Gameldien says his mother "is still crying and severely traumatised".
"We'll speak to you later."
