Bloemfontein - An elderly Free State farmer and his wife have been shot dead in their home on Florida Farm in the Trompsburg district, police said on Tuesday.
Southern Free State area commissioner Baile Motswenyane said workers at the farm became suspicious on Monday afternoon when neither Jan Greyling, 67, nor his wife Johanna, 63, came out of the house during the day.
"One of the workers decided to look through the kitchen window, and realised that the kitchen chairs were broken and lying around," he said.
"As they suspected that something might be wrong, they immediately contacted the police at Trompsburg."
On arrival at the farm, about 25km from the town, police found the body of Mr Greyling with a bullet wound in the head and "multiple wounds".
In a bedroom, Mrs Greyling was found dead in a chair with two bullet wounds behind the left ear.
It was not known whether anything was missing from the house, but it was possible guns were stolen from a safe which was found open in the bedroom.
Police were following what Motswenyane said were "some leads", and a murder docket had been opened.
