Johannesburg - A wounded robber was arrested near Johannesburg on Wednesday following a shootout with police who came across a cash-in-transit heist in which a security guard was shot dead, said Gauteng police.
Director Govindsamy Mariemuthoo said robbers in three vehicles ambushed a Fidelity Guard vehicle on the N12 to Potchefstroom, near the Kloof mine, at 11.30.
They used their vehicles to overturn the cash van with three guards inside, then shot dead one of the guards.
The other two guards were hurt, but it was not immediately known whether their injuries were from the crash or inflicted by firearms.
The robbers took the guards' weapons.
Patrolling police came across the attack and exchanged fire with the robbers.
They arrested a wounded robber and recovered a firearm. A Mercedes-Benz car used in the heist was abandoned at the scene.
Mariemuthoo would not say whether any money was taken.
