Johannesburg - A 37-year-old man was shot and killed during a robbery and five youths were arrested, North West police said on Wednesday.
Superintendent Louis Jacobs said the incident happened on Tuesday night on a road between Orkney and Klerksdorp. The arrests were made on Wednesday morning.
"Nico Nel was on his way to visit friends in Orkney when he stopped in his Ford Bantam bakkie and was overpowered by six men," said Jacobs.
The six then sped off in his bakkie.
Jacobs said police received a complaint of a speeding bakkie in Wolmaransstad on Wednesday morning.
"Police gave chase to the bakkie and it eventually stopped and the six got out and fled on foot," said Jacobs.
Two youths aged 18, as well as a 16-year-old, were arrested at the scene.
Nel's cellphone was found in their possession and Nel's family was contacted. A 7.65mm pistol was also found in the bakkie.
"In the early hours of Wednesday his family went in search of him. His body was found with gunshot and stab wounds," said Jacobs.
After the discovery of Nel's body two more people, aged 18 and 19, were arrested in Kanana near Klerksdorp, while a sixth person was still on the run.
