Johannesburg - A suspected robber and a security guard were shot dead on Wednesday during an attempted cash-in-transit heist, Gauteng police said.
Director Govindsamy Mariemuthoo said robbers in four vehicles had ambushed a Fidelity Guard van on the N12 to Potchefstroom, near the Kloof mine, at 11:30.
They used their vehicles to overturn the cash van with three guards inside, then shot dead one of the guards. Another guard was shot and wounded. The robbers took three pistols from the guards.
Patrolling police came across the scene and exchanged fire with the robbers.
They arrested a wounded robber and recovered a firearm. A Mercedes-Benz car used in the heist was abandoned at the scene. Body in abandoned bakkie
The other attackers fled with an unspecified amount of cash from the van.
A body was found in an abandoned bakkie believed to have been used in the heist.
Mariemuthoo said the man could have been shot by police during the earlier exchange of fire.
Police believe the robbers used four vehicles in the attack on the cash van - two bakkies, the Mercedes-Benz and a green Porsche.
Mariemuthoo said the wounded robber was in hospital under police guard.
Police also recovered a "certain amount" of cash, but would not say whether this was all the money stolen.
