Cop kills armed robber

Johannesburg - An armed robber has been shot dead in Etwatwa, near Benoni, after pointing a firearm at a policeman who tried to stop him on his bicycle, said North Rand police.

"The police officer knew him as he was wanted on several charges of armed robbery... in the greater Etwatwa area," said Opperman.

Seeing him cycling in Etwatwa on Wednesday, the policeman tried to stop him, but the robber threw down his bicycle and ran away, he said.

The policeman cornered him at a nearby house.

When the robber ignored warnings to throw down his firearm, the policeman opened fire on him, hitting him in his upper body. He died on the scene.
