Durban - A hitman took out the wrong target when he shot dead a visitor at the home of the man he was thought to have been hired to kill on Thursday, said police.

Fana Nikwe, 40, was visiting his neighbour Mbongiseni Ndwalane in the Bhomela location when a man knocked on the door asking for "Mr Ndwalane", said Captain Gerald Mfeka.

Nikwe left the lounge to see who was at the door, but as he got there he was shot six times. The gunman fled. Nikwe died on the scene.

Mfeka said Ndwalane grabbed his licensed firearm and chased the gunman, but he jumped into a waiting silver car, which drove off.

Several 9mm shells were recovered at the scene.
