Johannesburg - A crime spree in which two armed men hijacked a car, kidnapped four women and raped two of them has ended with one of the men shooting the other, said Pretoria police on Monday.

The two men hijacked a car in Bronkhorstspruit on Monday. They kidnapped two women, who were walking on a street nearby, and raped them in a house, said inspector Paul Ramaloko.

The men then went to a different area, kidnapped another two women and took them to an open veld where they tried to rape them.

The rape failed after a struggle broke out between the two men and a shot went off, hitting one of the men, said Ramaloko.

The shot suspect has been arrested on charges of hijacking, rape, attempted rape, assault, kidnapping and the possession of an unlicensed firearm.

He is in hospital under police custody.

Ramaloko said the other man escaped.
