Johannesburg - The 11-year-old son of a gardener drowned in a swimming pool at a house in Rivonia, Johannesburg emergency services said on Thursday.

"His father was tending to the garden on Thursday afternoon and the next thing he knew his son had drowned," said spokesperson Malcolm Midgley.

The boy had been playing on steps of the pool.

"Johannesburg emergency services as well as a Netcare doctor who was on the scene could not save him," said Midgley.

He said the homeowner was away on holiday.
