Johannesburg - Vigilantes have beaten to death a burglar in Tembisa, North Rand police said on Tuesday.

Superintendent Eugene Opperman said residents saw the 23-year-old man break into a shack on Sunday.

A mob gathered, chased him and beat him up when they caught him.

Patrolling police tried to save the man from his assailants, and took him to hospital, but he died of his injuries.

Opperman asked anyone able to provide the police with information about the attack to contact the Tembisa detective service on 011-926-2970.
