Johannesburg - Former Springbok winger Gerrie Germishuys, who was shot by
robbers at his house in Northcliff at the weekend, will undergo a second
operation in Milpark Hospital on Monday.
Germishuys, 57, was shot three times on Saturday afternoon after he
struggled against a robber and accomplice who wanted to tie up and rob him
and his wife, Sarie.
"The two of them rushed at me and I yelled. Gerrie came out and one of them
held him with a revolver to his head. One of the men tried to remove the rings from my fingers."
"They wanted to tie us up and Gerrie started struggling with the man and
nearly overpowered him. The man freed himself and fired three shots," said
Mrs Germishuys on Sunday.
The robbers left empty-handed and are still at large.
The bullets hit Germishuys in the right cheek and right hand. "One bullet
entered through his cheek and is lodged in his neck. It holds no danger and
will be removed later."
Germishuys's jawbone was temporarily re-attached during surgery on Saturday
night.
Doctors will try to repair damage to the finger bones in his right hand on
Monday.
"He is still very upset and under heavy sedation. I have not been able to
talk to him yet and his face is severely swollen," said his wife.
According to Amelda Swarts, spokesperson for Milpark Hospital, Germishuys'
condition was still critical but stable and he would remain in the intensive
care unit.
One of Germishuys's daughters, Carla, 22, was expected to arrive in
Johannesburg on Monday to support her wounded father.
Carla, a triathlon athlete from the University of Pretoria, was attending a
practice camp in the Free State when she received the message about the
shooting.
According to Mrs Germishuys it was not yet clear how the robbers had gained
entrance to the premises.
