Nelspruit - A man appeared in court on Monday on charges of breaking into a 14-year-old girl's room in the early hours of New Year's Day and raping her.
The 31-year-old man asked to be released on bail, saying he works in Gauteng and has to support the children of his two late sisters, as well as his sick mother.
Nelspruit regional court magistrate Albertus le Roux denied him bail to prevent him from harassing the victim.
The man was not asked to plead to charges of housebreaking with the intent to rape as well as rape, and the case was postponed to January 26 for
further investigation.
According to the State, the man was heavily drunk when he left his house shortly after midnight.
He is accused of making his way to the girl's house, breaking in through her bedroom window and raping her after threatening to stab her with a sharp object, which looked like a knife.
The girl was raped for about four hours. When the man left, the girl called her mother for help.
She was taken to the police station where a case was opened, and then to a doctor who confirmed she had been raped.
The accused was arrested at noon while watching TV in his younger brother's room.
The girl, who is meant to start high school this month, is currently undergoing counselling.
