Johannesburg - Former Springbok wing Gerrie Germishuys was upbeat on Friday as he was released from the intensive care unit at the Milpark hospital in Johannesburg.
He said he hoped he would soon be discharged from the hospital.
Germishuys was recovering after being shot in the head and hands during an armed robbery at his home last weekend.
Germishuys said he had received calls from well-wishers from all over the world.
"My wife jokingly said that someone had called from every country in the world, except for Russia. And can you believe it, that afternoon, someone called me from Moscow."
He said the robbery was very traumatic.
"My wife told me she was going for a quick swim. Shortly after going outside, I heard her shout and stormed outside."
"That's when I came upon a man who pointed a weapon at her."
He said it was an awful feeling that he did not wish on anyone. "You should pray hard that you are never in such a situation," he added.
He then told how he was shot after rushing at the robber.
"I don't know if I did the right thing. Many people say you should keep quiet and do as the robbers tell you. But what if you keep quiet and the robbers shoot you in any case and rape your wife?"
"The problem in SA is that people have become used to the crime and violence in the country."
But he is not bitter after the attack.
He said he was fortunate to have survived the experience.
"I have also come closer to God. Experiences like these make you realise you have to get your life in order," he said.
