Johannesburg - More than 80 gay couples have been married in court since the Civil Union Act was passed on December 1, and home affairs expects an upturn on Valentine's Day, February 14.

Spokesperson Mantshele Tau said that in the six weeks since it became legal for gay couples to wed, 84 had registered civil unions at home affairs.

This did not include those who married in church, or according to other rites.

Sixth country to legalise gay marriage

Tau said there could well be a marked increase on Valentine's Day.

"That's not to say that gay couples will suddenly want to marry because the law has been changed, but we expect more weddings on Valentine's Day," he said.

South Africa is the sixth country to legalise gay marriages.
