Farmer 'had rope around neck'

Johannesburg - The body of a 68-year-old farmer was found on Friday morning near a gate to his farm outside Vredefort, said North West police.
Superintendent Louis Jacobs said workers found Piet Barnard Venter's body in a patch of tall grass near the gate, about two kilometres from the farmhouse.
Venter's Toyota 4x4 bakkie was also found abandoned on the road between Parys and Fochville at 08:30.
Police believed that Venter was overpowered at the gate on his way home to the farm Somerplaas on Thursday night after taking his workers to Parys.
He had no visible wounds of any significance, Jacobs said, but a piece of rope was tied around his neck. It was believed that he had been strangled.
There was no sign of a break-in at the farmhouse and nothing was missing except his cellphone, which he had with him.
It was believed that his attackers fled in his bakkie, taking the cellphone with them. The tracking device on the bakkie presumably activated and the vehicle's engine cut out.
Police were still investigating the circumstances of the attack, said Jacobs.
