Pretoria - An armed robber repeatedly beat a 64-year-old woman from
Erasmuskloof, Pretoria, with a blunt object over the head before ripping her
wedding and engagement rings from her fingers.
"He hit me about five times with a round, blunt object until I became dizzy.
My glasses fell off and I couldn't see a thing."
"He then grabbed my wedding and engagement rings, cellphone and watch and
ran away," said Marie Meyer from her bed in Kloof Hospital on Sunday.
She had to receive several stitches to her head and her eyes were still
black and blue.
To make matters worse, the police had still not taken her statement by
Sunday afternoon, despite the fact that the robbery and assault took place
about 23:30 on Friday night.
According to Meyer she was watching television when her dog started
growling. The dog ran up and down inside the house and barked at the windows
and sliding door of the lounge.
"I switched on the garden lights, but didn't see anything. When I returned
to the lounge I saw a movement like as if there were two people on
the veranda."
"I ran to the other side of the room to push the panic button."
The next moment the large window of the lounge was shattered.
"The robber simply walked in, quite arrogantly."
"I ran to the kitchen and tried to leave the house, but the door was locked.
The man reached me and started hitting me. I stumbled around in the kitchen
because I was very dizzy."
Meyer's son, André, had to take down his mother's statement with the help of
a former policeman and take it to Brooklyn police station.
He was angry because the police only turned up at his mother's house on
Saturday afternoon to investigate the incident. "When I called them on
Friday night, they told me to be patient, that they were busy and that they
would be at my mother's home only about 04:00."
Meyer and her son were considering laying a charge against the police.
According to police spokesperson inspector Anton Breedt, the police would
soon visit Meyer. He said police had already taken fingerprints at the
house.
Meyer's daughter, Corné, who lives in a townhouse in Moreleta Park, was also
robbed on Saturday.
