Cape Town - A 30-year-old man shot dead a priest and wounded his ex-girlfriend then turned the gun on himself at a church in Ocean View, Cape Town police said on Tuesday.

Church members were busy with bible study at 20:00 on Monday when Mvusi Dondolo drew a revolver and fired several shots, said Inspector Bernadine Steyn.

Reverend Zinikele Mokson, 65, of Masiphumelele township, was hit in the head and died at the scene.

"Another shot wounded Dondolo's 30-year-old ex-girlfriend in the neck, shoulder and back."

She was taken to hospital in a stable, but serious condition.

Dondolo then fired a shot through his mouth, killing himself, said Steyn.

She said the firearm used in the incident was confiscated. It was not registered in anybody's name.

The cause of the shootings was unknown.
