Guard injured as ATM explodes
25/01/2007 10:12 - (SA)
Johannesburg - A security guard was injured in an explosion at an ATM in Meyerton at about 02:00 on Thursday, said paramedics.
Netcare 911 spokesperson Mark Stokoe said they took the guard to a private hospital where he was in a serious but stable condition.
An all night security guard had seen some people fiddling with the ATM machine at the corner of Johan le Roux and Bell roads and called for an armed reaction vehicle as back up.
"One of them said it appeared as if there was smoke coming from the ATM machine," said Stokoe.
"They approached to within about three metres when suddenly the ATM exploded.
"One guard was injured, with facial injuries, lacerations and bleeding as well as bleeding from the nose and generalised pain to the right side of his body."
The ATM was extensively damaged.
