Nelspruit - A 12-year-old girl will have to testify against her father who is accused of beating her mother to death with the handle of a garden hoe.

The girl, who was ten at the time, reportedly witnessed the murder on 22 August 2004.

She saw her mother be tied with wire to a chair. Her mother was then repeatedly hit on the head with the hoe handle until she fell unconscious.

Her father took her mother to hospital, but she died before they got there.

Her father, is a known dagga dealer from Ghoboza near Nelspruit and had allegedly sent his wife to sell dagga for him at an informal settlement in Sabie.

She took their daughter and didn't return until two weeks later.

He then allegedly accused his wife of cheating on him.

He looked tired when he appeared in the Nelspruit regional court on Wednesday.

His lawyer told the court that his client wasn't well and asked if the trial could be set for 16 May to give him time to recover.

    The State agreed.

He has pleaded not guilty to murder and is out on R1 000 bail.
