Still fighting
Desmond Tutu is showing no signs of slowing down as he turns 77, and is still an advocate for justice.

  • Bloemfontein - The Bloemfontein Regional Court on Monday sentenced Sandile Tsopo, husband of Free State education MEC Ouma Tsopo, to four years imprisonment on a fraud conviction.

Sandile Tsopo, his sister Martha Nombulelo Nqulo, and Nitja Daniel Makhathini were earlier found guilty of defrauding the Free State education department of more than R360 000.

Ouma Tsopo was the MEC for health when her husband was involved in the fraud incident.

Nqulo was sentenced to two years imprisonment, wholly suspended, for five years. Makhathini was also sentenced to four years imprisonment, of which two years were suspended for four years.

However the defence teams have asked for leave to appeal the conviction and sentences.

The leave to appeal hearing will be heard on February 1.
