Johannesburg - A Benoni woman was shot and killed in a robbery when three men entered her home and opened fire, Gauteng police said on Friday.
Inspector Juanita Killian said the men "burst into the house shooting randomly" shortly after unsuccessfully attempting to rob another house in the area on Thursday.
"Three heavily armed suspects tried to rob a home at Benoni's Agriculture Holdings but did not succeed as the owner opened fire... they tried again a few minutes later and succeeded," she said.
After allegedly shooting and killing the woman, around 35 years old, they stole a bakkie, electronic equipment and cellphones.
The bakkie, fitted with a locating device, was later found in Tembisa.
"No one else was injured, the woman was alone... her husband was traumatised when he returned home later," said Killian.
Police are investigating the incident and hope to make arrests soon.
"We have intensified patrols in that area as it is frequently targeted," she said.
