Johannesburg - Five dangerous awaiting-trial prisoners have escaped from Bela-Bela police cells, Limpopo police said on Friday.
They cut the cell's roof bars and escaped around 19:00 on Thursday, said superintendent Mohale Ramatseba.
The prisoners were detained for violent crimes including attempted murder, rape and housebreaking.
Three of them - Johannes Mokgohloe, 29, Eddie Malaya, 23, and 25-year-old Johannes Hlongwane - were facing rape charges.
Ramatseba identified the other two as 26-year-old Piet Mokalapa, who was arrested for attempted murder, and Michael Khumalo, 27, awaiting trial for housebreaking.
He warned the escapees were dangerous and could be armed.
"People should not try to apprehend them and rather inform the nearest police station when they see them."
Anyone with information on the men's whereabouts could contact Crime Stop on 08600-10111.
