Butterworth - A group of armed robbers at Butterworth were surprised when their supposedly soft target, an elderly woman and her children alone at home, sent them packing.
The men kicked open a door at the home of the former mayor's wife, Ndileka Ndindwa, 62, about 21:45 on Saturday.
Police spokesperson Jackson Manatha said the group of men had pretended to be policemen.
Ndindwa was in her bedroom when they were attacked.
Her children, who were watching television, ran to her room, and the gunmen began shooting in that direction. Despite being hit in the shoulder by a bullet, Ndindwa returned fire with her pistol, and the attackers fled.
She is recovering in a private hospital in East London.
