  • Johannesburg - Two Mpumalanga police officers have been served with suspension letters after placing a female prisoner in a male prison cell where she was raped, SABC news reported on Tuesday.

Provincial commissioner Africa Khumalo signed the letters of suspension on Monday.

The woman was gang raped by six men in a Volksrust cell on February 16.

She was erroneously detained in the male cell after she was arrested for being drunk in public.

Khumalo has appointed two detectives to investigate the matter.

Meanwhile, parliament's joint monitoring committee on improvement of quality of life and status of women said in a statement that it was taken aback by the issue.

"We urge the judicial system to take drastic actions against the officers," said chairperson Storey Masafele Rosalia Morutoa.
