  • Johannesburg - Two people were arrested on Wednesday in connection with the theft of jewellery worth more than $500 000 from the home of Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, ex-wife of former president Nelson Mandela.

Two of Madikizela-Mandela's safes were stolen and a third tampered with in the fortress-like house protected by security guards, cameras and dogs in Soweto near Johannesburg.

Two domestic workers, who were later found in possession of the jewellery, are due to appearin court on Thursday.

Jaqueline Mbatha of Soweto police said: "Two people have been arrested, they will appear in court tomorrow (Thursday). The items of jewellery will be kept by the police until the case is finalised."

Several of Madikizela-Mandela's relatives were staying in the house while she was on a trip to Chicago.

The loss of the jewellery was discovered only when Madikizela-Mandela arrived home on Monday night and saw the safes were missing.

Mbatha said: "Police at the house said she was quite distressed by the discovery."
