Nelspruit - The mayor of Mpumalanga's Ehlanzeni district municipality, Khosi Mkhonto, will queue with other municipal officials to collect her salary cheque this month.
The municipality has asked all officials to collect their February salary cheques in person, to clamp down on ghost workers.
"The aim is to verify that only employees and councillors who are currently working for the municipality are on the payroll," said municipal spokesperson Mabutho Sithole.
Each employee will be expected to produce their identity document when collecting their cheque.
"[Once] verified the cheque shall be handed over to the individual," said Sithole.
Ehlanzeni has 133 registered employees on its database, but it needs to be updated after Bushbuckridge was moved from Limpopo to Mpumalanga.
Half the employees of the former Bohlabela district municipality in Limpopo were transferred to Ehlanzeni in March last year. Before then, Bohlabela was a cross-border municipality.
The Ehlanzeni district municipality plays an administrative and oversight role for local municipalities within its jurisdiction, namely Mbombela, Umjindi, Thaba Chweu, Nkomazi and Bushbuckridge.
Ehlanzeni includes popular tourism destinations such as the Blyde River Canyon, Kruger National Park and the Panorama.
