Pietermaritzburg - Two men who killed a farmer in a botched hijacking, were sentenced to life by the Pietermaritzburg High Court on Friday.
Sphelele Mkhize and Sphamandla Nqayi were convicted of the murder of farmer Anand Sitaram, 61, near Hopewell, between Pietermaritzburg and Richmond, in July 2004.
The accused confronted him at a spot where he dropped off employees who worked on his farm. One fired several shots at Sitaram, wounding him in the head. He died in hospital in Pietermaritzburg the next day.
The two, aged 19 and 20 respectively at the time, ran away after Sitaram was wounded without taking his bakkie.
State advocate Dheelan Naidoo requested life sentences be given to the men, saying that many violent crimes were committed by young men.
Judge President Vuka Tshabalala imposed the sentences.
