Cape Town - A robber was shot and wounded on Monday after he and three others robbed a shop in Grassy Park of cash, said police.

Inspector Bernadine Steyn said the gang entered the shop in Ottery Road at 10:30 and demanded the keys to the safe.

She said: "Employees and customers were held at gunpoint while some of the staff were taken to an office and forced to open the safe."

While running out of the shop, the four were confronted by police.

"They fired several shots and police returned fire," said Steyn.

One of the four was shot in the leg and arm. The wounded robber was later taken to hospital under police guard.

Two of the men were arrested and charged with armed robbery and attempted murder, and a fourth man was still on the run.

"We recovered some of the money and confiscated a firearm," said Steyn.
