Johannesburg - Three awaiting-trial prisoners escaped from custody in New Hanover after cutting through a cell door and the exercise yard enclosure with a hacksaw blade, said KwaZulu-Natal police on Tuesday.
Superintendent Joshua Gwala said the three were noticed missing when police went to check on the cells at 19.10 on Monday at New Hanover police station.
The prisoners cut through an inner door made of metal bars leading from their cell and entered the exercise yard through a solid outer door that was believed to have been left unlocked, said Gwala.
The prisoners then cut through the bars of a metal grid covering the exercise yard and escaped.
Seven stayed behind
The prisoners are Sibusiso Masuku, 27, Sanele Nxumalo, 24, both awaiting trial for robbery, and Khethinkosi Ntanzi, 25, awaiting trial for murder.
Seven awaiting-trial prisoners stayed behind in the cell, said Gwala.
Police believe a hacksaw was used because of the cuts in the metal.
Despite an extensive search in the area, the escapees were still at large.
Police have appealed to the public with information on the escape to contact detective inspector Bhekumuzi Zulu on 033 502 0011.
