Johannesburg - Six men escaped from custody at the Amsterdam police station, Mpumalanga police said on Wednesday.
Superintendent Abie Khoabane said the six escaped from police cells after cutting through the ceiling around 22:00 on Tuesday.
"They cut the door of the cells, then made their way to the exercise room where they cut through the roof and escaped," said Khoabane.
The six men were being held on charges of armed robbery and murder.
They had appeared before the Amsterdam magistrate's court earlier on Tuesday.
Emmanuel Themba Simelane, 31, Welcome Radebe, 29, Bafana Nyembe, 23, Thabang Ndlovu Mkhatswa, 21, Thabo Setlhare, 29, and William Nkambule, 28, had robbed an Amsterdam business then shot dead a petrol attendant late last year.
"The men are considered to be very dangerous, we urge the public not to try and apprehend them themselves but rather to contact police," said Khoabane.
