Graskop - The body of a Gauteng woman was found at popular tourist lookout point God's Window in Mpumalanga on Wednesday.
It's believed the woman was apparently raped, before being murdered.
Inspector Simon Mashulwane of the local police station said the woman's body had been found at 09:00 on Wednesday morning.
Passers-by had reported seeing a Tata vehicle with a Gauteng registration at a lookout point just before God's Window.
Melanie Dingle, a paramedic of the MD Emergency Services at Graskop said she was first at the scene, and saw Fecassin Swaleiah Sheik, 35, lying on her stomach. Sheik's body was lying about 20m from her vehicle. Dingle said the attack must have taken place on Tuesday night or early on Wednesday, because rigor mortis had not set in yet.
She said Sheik's ankles had been tied with her socks and her hands were bound with her shoelaces, but the woman had managed to free one.
Dingle said Sheik possibly was smothered with her own clothes.
Mashulwane could not confirm this.
Purse found in her car
"It's strange that her vehicle was found locked at the scene, with her car keys a few metres away," he said.
Dingle said Sheik's broken bracelet had been found near the keys.
There was no cellphone and it appeared nothing else was missing.
Sheik's purse was found in the car.
Mashulwane said preliminary investigations pointed to rape.
